To New Human Machine Interfaces
People going to Cebit would have the opportunity to look at new interfaces between man and machines. Everybody has dreamt to access its computer as shown in the movie Minority Report. New algorithms of gesture recognition are making this a reality.
The Fraunhofer Institute, a German laboratory, will demonstrate in Hannover the iPoint Presenter. This sofware enables a computer to track gestures captured by a webcam. The system is thus driven by mere hand moves with no need for any specific device and no contact with any screen.
Due to faster computer and biomimetic research, computer image recognition is currently making rapid progress. Coupled with voice recognition, such technologies seem to promise richer way to deal with computers. The current keyboard and mouse paradigms will certainly remain there for a long time (after all, a lot of us have been teached to use these clunky interfaces since childhood). But we could certainly think of situation when such interactive features will come handy.
Anyway, here at HPC Project, we are happy to watch every step towards a richer interaction with computers. Because it means that people would be able to deal easily with more complex datasets and reality representations. And after all, we think that the future of computing resides on providing easy access for everyone to powerful computer simulation tools without requiring specific computer literacy.
